Abstract
First branchial (pharyngeal) anomalies are very rare clinical condition and result from an incomplete obliteration of the ventral end of the first brachial cleft. The cyst or fistula is in close relation to the external auditory canal. First branchial cleft cysts are commonly divided into two types. A type I anomaly is represented by a cyst/fistula in the pre- or post- auricular area. The type II anomaly is a cyst, sinus, actual fistula, or any combination thereof, usually found below the angle of the mandible. Treatment consists of a complete excision of the epithelial wall of the fistula, cyst, or sinus. Incomplete excision is often associated with a high recurrence rate as well as recurrent infection and disfigurement. Recently, we experienced a case of type I 1st branchial cleft anomaly which were treated with surgical excision without any complication or recurrence.
